Kansas License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in Kansas?

License plate renewal in Kansas extends your vehicle’s registration for 12 months. Your license plate and physical plate remain unchanged. The county treasurer issues a new registration card and a colored validation sticker for the rear plate.

  • Annual cycle. Passenger vehicles are renewed on a staggered monthly schedule tied to the first letter of the owner’s last name, according to K.S.A. § 8-134.
  • Renewal is not a title transaction. Buying or selling a vehicle requires a separate title transfer at the Kansas Division of Vehicles; renewal only extends the existing registration.
  • Passenger cars, motorcycles, trucks, trailers, and electric vehicles are all renewed annually. Trucks over 12,000 pounds and trailers not subject to the staggered system expire on December 31, with payment due by the last day of February.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Kansas License Plate?

Registration expires at midnight on the last day of your designated month. The county treasurer sends a renewal notice approximately 30 days before this date, and you can also print your renewal notice online through the Division of Vehicles portal.

  • Online portal opens renewals 45 days before expiration. In-person and mail renewals can be completed anytime before the deadline.
  • Kansas does not allow a grace period. The Kansas Highway Patrol confirms that enforcement begins the day after expiration, though charges filed within 10 days may be dismissed if a current check is presented in court.
  • A late fee of $1 per month (or part of a month) is assessed on unpaid registration fees according to K.S.A. § 8-143(c).
  • Kansas does not require a safety inspection or emissions test to complete renewal.

Before renewing, ensure your Kansas liability insurance is current and on file. Have your renewal notice or plate number handy. Inspection documents are not required, as noted by the Division of Vehicles.

  • Online through iKan covers most passenger vehicles and motorcycles. You will need the PIN printed on your renewal notice. Trailers and RVs cannot be renewed online.
  • At the county treasurer’s vehicle office, bring your renewal notice (or plate number) and proof of insurance. Payment options vary by county but typically include cash, check, and credit card. You receive your sticker and registration card on the spot. Find your office through the Kansas Department of Revenue’s vehicle services page.
  • Mail renewals are sent to the address on your renewal notice. Include the tear-off slip, payment by check or money order, and a copy of your insurance card. Allow 7-10 business days to receive your sticker.
  • Selected counties, including Johnson County, offer self-service kiosks at vehicle offices for on-the-spot renewal by cash, check, or credit card.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Kansas?

The state registration fee is only part of the renewal bill. The annual vehicle property tax, set by the county, usually constitutes the larger portion of the total payment amount.

  • Passenger vehicles weighing up to 4,500 pounds pay an annual registration fee of $30; over 4,500 pounds is $40. Both figures are from the fee schedule in K.S.A. § 8-143.
  • Motorcycles renew for $16. Fully electric motorcycles pay $30.
  • Fully electric vehicles have an annual fee of $165, plug-in hybrids $100, and standard hybrids $70. Electric and hybrid fees replace the standard passenger fee, not add to it.
  • Four statutory fees apply to each renewal: $2.00 for the Highway Patrol, $1.25 for the Law Enforcement Training Center, $4.00 for DMV modernization, and $5.00 for county service, totaling $12.25 per vehicle.
  • The $1 per month penalty described in the timing section is modest, but unpaid vehicle property tax can significantly increase the amount.
  • Personalized plates cost $45.50, billed on a five-year cycle (years ending in 0 or 5). Organizational sponsor plates add a plate designation fee of $40 plus an annual sponsor fee from $10 to $50, according to the Kansas Division of Vehicles plate catalog.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in Kansas?

Most passenger cars, trucks weighing up to 12,000 pounds, and motorcycles are eligible for online renewal through iKan. The portal accepts eCheck and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), with a processing fee charged by the payment processor. Stickers and registration cards arrive by mail within 5-7 business days.

Trailers, RVs, and vehicles without a PIN on the renewal notice cannot be renewed online. These registrations are directed to the county treasurer’s vehicle office or for mail renewal. Vehicles flagged for lapsed insurance are also blocked from the portal.

  • Mail renewal package: tear-off slip, check or money order, and a copy of your current insurance card, sent to the address on the notice.
  • Use the Kansas Vehicle Property Tax Calculator to estimate your total before payment.

If iKan can process your vehicle, online renewal is the fastest route to an updated sticker; the county office handles anything the portal rejects.
