Replacement License Plate in Kansas

What is a License Plate Replacement in Kansas?

A replacement in Kansas is an unscheduled reissuance of a license plate or registration sticker prompted by loss, theft, damage, or illegibility. The Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles administers the rules; county treasurers’ vehicle offices handle the transaction.

  • Replacement differs from annual registration renewal. The replacement fee is charged according to K.S.A. § 8-139, not on the renewal schedule, and has its own documentation requirements.
  • Kansas is a one-plate state. Most vehicles require only one rear plate (K.S.A. § 8-133). Replacement covers this single plate.
  • The statute allows for “duplicate or replacement” issuance, but standard replacements usually assign a new plate number. Kansas began replacing embossed plates with digital ones statewide in 2024, and affected owners receive new alphanumeric sequences.
  • Owners must apply for a replacement immediately upon discovering a plate’s loss, damage, or illegibility. Conditions triggering this are reflected in the fee section below.

When Do You Need to Replace Your Kansas License Plate?

K.S.A. § 8-139 requires owners to act at the moment of a plate’s loss, damage, or illegibility. The statute uses the word “immediately.”

  • Lost or stolen plates are subject to replacement. Stolen plates require a police report with a case number before the county treasurer processes the replacement. Lost plates do not require a police report.
  • Damaged or illegible plates also trigger replacement. Kansas does not set a specific timeframe for replacement; the statute language is “immediate application.”
  • A county treasurer may waive the fee if a plate was damaged or destroyed during removal from a vehicle being transferred to a new owner, provided the owner otherwise complied with transfer laws under K.S.A. § 8-135.
  • New residents must register within 90 days of establishing residency in Kansas, according to the Division of Vehicles registration page. This process goes through the new registration channel, not the replacement channel.

How to Get a Replacement License Plate in Kansas

License plate replacement is handled through your county treasurer’s vehicle office. Gather documentation before visiting.

  • Bring valid ID (Kansas driver’s license), current proof of insurance, and the registration receipt or plate number. Form TR-211 must be completed at the office or in advance.
  • For stolen plates, provide the police case number from the agency that took the theft report. The county treasurer will not process the replacement without it. As per the trigger rules above, lost plates do not require police filing.
  • Surrender any remnants of a damaged or destroyed plate at the counter. The office issues a replacement plate during the visit.
  • A power of attorney form is required if someone other than the registered owner is completing the replacement on the owner’s behalf.
  • There is no mail-in or separate online replacement channel for lost or stolen plates. The iKan portal covers registration renewals, which may trigger plate reissuance during the transition from embossed to digital plates statewide, but separate replacement is only done in person.

Can You Replace Kansas License Plate Online?

No. Kansas does not offer online replacement for lost, stolen, or damaged plates. The iKan portal handles registration renewals and driver’s license renewals, not separate plate replacement transactions.

One exception applies during the statewide plate replacement program: owners of embossed plates marked for replacement during renewal can renew through iKan and receive a temporary sticker, with a permanent digital plate mailed within 30 days. This path is tied to the renewal cycle, not a plate loss or damage event.

For all other replacement scenarios, your county treasurer’s vehicle office is the sole channel. Kansas has 105 counties, each with a treasurer’s office that handles vehicle transactions. The Kansas County Treasurers Directory provides addresses and contact information.

Separate plate replacement means an in-person visit to your county treasurer with Form TR-211, ID, and proof of insurance.

How Much is License Plate Replacement in Kansas?

The statutory plate fee is low, but additional county-level fees raise the total above the headline figure.

  • K.S.A. § 8-139 sets the base plate fee at $2. Replacement of a registration sticker costs $0.50, and a duplicate registration receipt is $1.
  • A reflectorized plate fee of $0.50 applies to each newly issued plate (per the Johnson County fee schedule).
  • County service fees add $5.00 per transaction in many counties. Some counties also charge a facility fee (up to $5.00) and a DMV modernization fee of $4.00. The total at the counter varies: Franklin County lists $4.00, Sedgwick County lists $8.00 for stolen plate replacement, and Pratt County lists $3.00.
  • Kansas does not charge a separate fee for one plate versus two plates. Only one rear plate is issued, so the fee covers one plate.
  • Credit and debit card payments carry a convenience fee of approximately 2.19% to 2.25% in counties that accept cards. Cash, check, and money order avoid this fee.
